CLINTON -- The small hamlet that would one day become the City of Clinton in DeWitt County began as a stop-over for folks travelling by wagon between Decatur and Bloomington.

The town was named after DeWitt Clinton, a prominent politician from New York, who was largely responsible for construction of the Erie Canal.

It was on the courthouse square in Clinton that Abraham Lincoln delivered one of his most memorable quotes about “fooling the people.”
