CHAMPAIGN, ILL - Lunch is supposed to be a time of the school day when everyone is able to have fun. However, for students who don’t feel like they have anyone at school they can sit with while they enjoy their meal, it can be a stressful and sad time. It is the reason Franklin Middle School in Champaign, along with thousands of other schools nationwide, took part in No One Eats Alone Day.
At Franklin, students were encouraged to sit with people they may not otherwise sit with. Games and get-to-know-you activities such as bingo were provided in order to encourage conversation. Sixth grader Langston Span says it was great getting to chat with people he did not usually sit with during lunch.
“Whenever I get the chance, I will talk to somebody new especially if they are new to Franklin because its a great way to show them how great Franklin is and make friends with someone else." Says Span.
While the national No One Eats Alone day was held on February 10th, Franklin Middle School opted instead to hold their event this week to coincide with Random Acts of Kindness week, which the school is also observing.
