Get your pet trim and fit in the new year

Could your pet stand to lose a few pounds?

Champaign, Il (WCIA) - Carrie Chandler-Harrison, a certified veterinary technician and a certified canine rehabilitation practitioner at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, shares tips on helping your pet lose a few pounds in 2018.

Her rescue pup Reis, whom Carrie describes as “slightly fat" is on a journey toward a healthy weight and Carrie has advise for viewers about the dangers of pet obesity and how to keep it at bay.

  • More than two-thirds of U.S. adults are overweight or obese, according to the National Institutes of Health.
  • Our pets are not far behind: the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says 58 percent of cats and 54 percent of dogs are overweight or obese.
  • As in people, extra weight in pets contributes to numerous health problems, such as arthritis, heart disease, and skin disease.
  • Also as in people, the key to weight loss success with pets is to focus on portion control and exercise.
  • The Shape Up, Pup! program at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital develops a personalized treatment plan for each patient that takes into consideration breed, size, lifestyle, and health conditions.
  • A large part of the program is educating/counseling owners on healthy practices and supporting the lifestyle changes needed to get the pet to a good weight.
  • Shape Up, Pup! has about a 75 percent success rate, with failures usually resulting from diet and exercise plans not being adhered to.
