Made in Illinois: Jerry Rhoads

When it comes to woodturning, it truly is an art form. For Jerry Rhodes, instead of paintbrushes and canvas, he relies on his tools and work bench to turn out his very unique creations. From pens to salt and pepper shakers, Rhoads creates a wide range of items from wood. A carpenter by trade, he has always had a knack for woodworking, however it wasn’t until a few years ago that he began testing his skill at more intricate designs.

"I got into making ink pens and got super hooked and then wanted to know more and more about turning and I had a few books and I found a few woodturning clubs." Says Rhoads

As he continued to hone his skill, Rhoads began creating more artistic pieces incorporating paint and intricate design elements. It is something that proved to be a big adjustment from the slightly more regimented world of carpentry.

"It took a while for me to get into doing the artier pieces before I would apply color to wood because my wife Diane and I like wood a lot and we like the natural colors." Says Rhoads

For him, every piece is a chance to create something unique and to improve his skill. For more information on Jerry, log on to his website www.jerryrhoadswoodturning.com
