MANTENO, ILL - Whether its topping a hot dog at a summertime barbeque, or spread on your favorite sandwich at lunch, mustard is a condiment that is a key part of many meals, but one most people often take for granted. However, for more than 160 years, staff at Plochman’s Mustard have been working every day to produce this popular topping.
Based just north of Kankakee, this company is one of the largest mustard factories in the nation. Plochman’s says they produce enough mustard in one day to be able to top more than 650,000 hot dogs. For plant manager Martin Faye, keeping the facility in working order is a big task, but one he says he enjoys.
"To me, this is like cooking at the uber level. I always enjoyed cooking myself. This is just taking it to an exponentially larger process." Says Faye.
The production process is quite simple, since producing mustard does not require baking or heat. Mustard seed is combined with vinegar and spices and then ground and bottled. Plochman’s says that while the production process has remained the same for more than 160 years, they always work to keep their quality consistent every day.
