Tuesday Ukulele Brings Sounds of Hawaii to Local Train Station

MATTOON, ILL - If you stand on the platform of the Mattoon train station around sunset, there are certain sounds you might expect to hear as you wait for a train bound for the Windy City. However, on Tuesday nights, you'll hear much more than the sounds of the train on the tracks, but also the sounds of the ukulele.

It is all part of a program called Tuesday Ukulele, put on through the Mattoon Arts Council. The group is a chance for ukulele enthusiasts to come together and play this four stringed wonder.

"It is an individual sound, it is not copied by guitar or other dolcimer or other instruments, and that's what is really interesting about it." says group member Gary Weber

Tuesday Ukulele practices at the train station, but takes performances on the road to community events and also to nursing homes. It is a chance to share a unique variety of music with everyone.
