Digital Detox
January 27 @ 1:00 PM - January 28 @ 11:00 AM
$120 - $140
Visitors come to Allerton from all over to escape the distractions and noise of everyday life. In a time where we are constantly connected, but surprisingly disconnected from each other, we can utilize part of what Robert Allerton created that still exists today – a place where you can experience a simpler time.

In the early 1900s, Robert Allerton provided his friends an escape from the suffocating smog of the city. They would come to “the Farms” in rural Monticello, where they could breathe fresh air… sleep in silence… and see the stars. He allowed them to physically detach from reality in a setting that not only welcomed that – it encouraged it. He provided an atmosphere that got people out of their normal routines and feelings.

Whether you just want a break from the constant pull of social media and texts, or need a starting point to make a bigger change – this Digital Detox event provides an opportunity to utilize Allerton’s unique atmosphere and make a commitment to truly get away.

Learn about practicing mindfulness in a workshop from the U of I Psychological Services Center, relax with a massage from Essential Massage Therapy (reservations/payment taken on-site), or explore the Mansion on a guided tour. Saturday night, enjoy conversation over a cash bar and dinner, and leave feeling refreshed after yoga on Sunday morning (mats provided on a first come, first served basis).

In addition, guests are encouraged to take advantage of their screen-free time in the natural, relaxing setting. Browse through the hundreds of books in the Library, bundle up and go for a hike, play a board game, work on a puzzle, or just sit and enjoy the view….

Jazz in Chicago: Yesterday and Today
February 11 @ 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
$25
In the bustling, booming 1920’s, Chicago was the jazz capital of the world — the hotbed in which Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, and Earl Hines created the entirely new sound and feel of swing. In this multimedia presentation, Sam Reese, Associate Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois, will explain how the economic boom of the 1920’s, the Great Migration of African-Americans, and a gelling of a new American identity all came together to make Chicago a great jazz city, yesterday and today. Enjoy the ambiance of the Mansion’s Library as you get insight into the best-known Chicago jazz clubs, and where and when you can still hear great live jazz in the Windy City.

After the lecture, enjoy a live performance of Chicago Jazz repertoire by the Traditional Jazz Orchestra in the Grand Gallery.

$25/person (Includes lecture, performance, and light refreshments.)
