IEMA arrived at two conclusions after reviewing school shootings and other crisis situations. It determined schools benefit from reinforced doors and shatter-resistant glass. It would also like to see physical locks for primary entrances.
Many schools in the state are old and outdated without certain safeguards in place. To better protect students and staff, it's offering these competitive grants to schools.
The application period started in January and more than 200 schools have applied so far. But, time is running out. School districts have until midnight Friday to apply.
