Series of suspicious fires investigated

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY -- Authorities are investigating suspicious fires in the Broadlands/Longview area. Since 2006, there have been about 20 suspicious fires in Raymond and Ayers townships, which includes Broadlands and Longview.

In comparison, there have been 15 - 20 suspicious fires for the rest of Champaign County during the same time frame. The structure fires varied from abandoned houses to occupied dwellings. The majority happened during spring and fall with a noticeable decrease during the middle of summer and winter.

The most recent include a fire in the 100 block of North Elm Street, Broadlands. $6,000 worth of damage happened when a detached garage burned about 10:15 pm, March 1, and ignited an adjacent residence.

March 30, about 5 am, an abandoned mobile home and two-story residence at 475 County Road 1900 East, in Raymond Township, were total losses with a value of $1,500.

April 14, about 4:45 am, about $60,000 worth of damage and loss were reported when a garage and its contents were burned at 1573 County Road 200 North, in Crittenden Township.
