ILLINOIS -- Charter school advocates were loud and proud at the Capitol Tuesday. They were calling on lawmakers to shoot down more than ten bills calling for greater restrictions on these schools. WCIA-3's Alex Davis keeps us Connected to the Capitol.

It was a big day for Illinois Network of Charter Schools (INCS). Not only was it the group's annual lobby day, but members claim they're defending attacks on their access to education. Educators, students and parents around the state are concerned about education funding, especially for charter schools.

"Yes, we are underfunding charters, but we're also underfunding all schools. This is about all schools being great and about the part that you all are playing in it."

With education funding on the chopping block and a number of anti-charter school bills in the statehouse... "Charter students, charter parents are engaged and ready and not willing to give up their schools and not willing to give up this fight."

They're sharing reasons why their schools are needed and deserve equal funding.

"We are a very positive choice for families to have in the community."

Their visit comes just two months after the Illinois Charter School Funding Task Force released a report calling on equal funding for all students.

"To give families a choice of curriculum, to give families a choice of the, you know, the opportunities as far as different styles of education, different styles of teaching and instruction."

There are 145 charter schools in the state; only 15 outside Chicago. Their approach to education is sometimes seen as "different" or "innovative," but it's something educators believe is needed.

"We just think those are things parents should have the choice of and not always be dictated by the local districts."

At the end of the day, INCS says it wants adults to put politics aside and do what's best for children.
