SPRINGFIELD -- Lawmakers are taking aim at school funding saying the current system is unfair. They propose a new way to shell out millions of dollars.

The Education Funding Advisory Committee wants to change the distribution system to make it fairer for all districts. It focused on how the state delivers funds to schools, rather than how much funding should be given.

In doing so, the group came up with a funding formula which tends to students' needs. It also takes school districts' local property wealth into account.

Committee members believe attaching money to intended purposes will bring about equity. A school funding reform bill is expected to be filed next month.
