Farmers look to governor for relief

ILLINOIS (WCIA) -- With winter around the corner, it's a race against time for local farmers to harvest crops.

After some unusual weather up north, the Illinois Farm Bureau is calling on Governor Bruce Rauner for help getting the job done.

Farmers want Rauner to declare a statewide harvest emergency so they can increase the amount of grain they can haul from their farms.

Local farmers say the extra pounds would buy more time and keep crops healthy before winter takes a toll.

"This is our payday. This is what we worked all year for."

But sadly, for some farmers, that hard work could go to waste. Unusually rainy weather put a sudden damper on harvest season.

"It's been a challenging fall season for everybody we know. Knocked out about 14 days in October."

It's been even worse for farmers up north, so much so the IFB wants a statewide harvest emergency declared from the governor.

"Anything to move the timely harvest along, we would take that."

If approved, trucks would be able to carry more grains which could prevent crops from going to waste.

"You will run into some field loss becausee corn is starting to deteriorate and the beans that haven't harvested area already going to deteriorate."

Right now, the Rock Island area is suffering the worst. Their state representativve released this statement: "The state of Illinois, to do whatever it can to help farmers make their living. In this case, this is very straight forward to do this."

Now farmers around the state are waiting to see how the governor responds, knowing they could be in the same position next year.

"I feel real sorry for my farming brothers up in northern Illinois."

"You never know what kind of harvest you could have. You always hope for the best and plan for the worst."

Governor Rauner's office did not respond to requests for a comment, but with temperatures dropping, many hope to get a response soon.

Thanksgiving is typically the cut-off for harvesting crops.
