SPRINGFIELD -- A new law will crack down on gun sellers. Now, anyone selling a gun must check the background of the person buying it.

Previously, buyers only had to submit to a check at a licensed store or gun show. Under the new law, owners are also required to report lost or stolen firearms within 72 hours.

Gun advocates say the legislation won't stop criminals. Before selling a firearm, an owner will have to call a state police hotline to find out if they buyer has a valid FOID card.
