ILLINOIS -- The push to force home builders to add fire sprinkler systems, could be put off yet again. Some lawmakers and organizations are backing a bill lengthening the debate over the issue. It would give more power to the legislature to talk it over.

The Illinois State Fire Marshal's plan would require fire sprinkler systems to be added to new homes and businesses. The sprinklers range anywhere from $6,500 to $15,000. The State Fire Marshal says these systems would improve public safety. Maryland and California are the only states to have a mandate like this in place.
