"Everything here is fresh and delicious."
And labeled, or at least, should be. A new law, put in place last month, requires vendors to display signs letting shoppers know where their products are coming from and if any pesticides were used.
"Some people have a sign up that says where they're from and, if they don't, a lot of times, I'll say, I'll just ask them, you know, 'Now, where did you come from?' and I'm trusting they're not going to lie to me."
But, that does happen. If you're not at a producers-only farmers market, some vendors may not be honest and upfront with consumers by passing off store-bought produce for organic, spray-free or chemical-free.
"You want to know where the food is coming from."
Jennifer Lindsey, a mother, says it's something she doesn't take lightly. She wants to know what her family is eating.
"And, the only way you're going to be able to do that is if it's being labeled and it's being told where it's coming from."
Lindsey says the required labels help her shop with confidence.
"I love shopping at a farmers market because I like to feed my family clean food."
Thanks to the law, shoppers can hold their vendors accountable.
"It's fresher, for one thing, and You're supporting your community and your area."
Illinois ranks third in the nation for the number of farmers markets with more than 375 known-markets in 2013. Only California and New York have more.
