Poison Control in need of a life line

ILLINOIS - ILLINOIS--If your child gets into a household chemical  - and you need to call the poison center. What if there was no one on the other end of the line to help?

"Apple juice and Pine-Sol could be mistaken if you don't keep your cleaning materials locked and away from kids," said Karen Cox of Mini O'Beirne Crisis Nursery.

The Mini O'Beirne Crisis Nursery has been in the capital city for nearly 30 years.

"Emergency care for children before the age of 6 who are at risk of abuse or neglect or whose parents are experiencing some type of crisis," said Cox.

Cox said one thing they do is tell families how to protect their children from dangers right inside the home.

"One of the things that we talked about is keeping medication safe and keeping cleaning supplies locked up. "

She said if worse comes to worse parents shouldn't hesitate to call poison control.

"Always have the poison control number posted in your home whether it be in the kitchen on your refrigerator."

But the Illinois Poison Center is part of the 10 percent of programs that has not received state funding.

"The poison centers are essential to the care of children in Illinois we need to make sure but those are funded because the poison centers I have been proven to save lives,"Dr. Douglas Carlson, chief of pediatrics at SIU."

The state's Poison center saves the state of an estimated 50 million dollars by helping people to resolve 90 percent of poison cases in their own homes.

"Fortunately most of those are not serious but when they are serious they work carefully with the physicians who will be caring for the patients," said Dr. Carlson.

In Illinois, more people go the hospital for poisonings than for injuries from guns and car accidents combined.

Poison centers across the country get more than four million calls every year.  The Illinois poison center handles more than 80,000 calls annually. Of those, almost half involve children 5 years of age and younger.
