ILLINOIS -- Lawmakers are proposing a way to help inmates further their education and their futures. Low-level offenders could knock three months off their probation time by earning a high school diploma or GED, and as much as six months for a bachelor's degree.

Supporters of the bill say it gives offenders an opportunity to choose a better path. If they violate any terms of probation, they would lose the education credits. The bill has passed the Senate and moves to the House for a vote.
