SPRINGFIELD -- Ash Wednesday is when Christians get the sign of the cross marked on their foreheads with ashes. It symbolizes mortality.

Area priests visited the Capitol to give ashes to lawmakers and other state employees. Ash Wednesday marks the official start to Lent. It's a 40-day period of prayer, penance and sacrifice before Easter.
