CHAMPAIGN COUNTY -- He fought for our country, but this Hometown Hero says he was an unlikely candidate for the honor. Rudi Laufhutte grew up in Nazi Germany. For him, it was never an option to fight for that side because of its history.

By chance, American soldiers came into his town and invited him to have a hot dog. Eventually, they brought him to American and, years later, he joined the Army.

Laufutte is the lab director at the Microanalysis Chemistry Laboratory at the University of Illinois.
