CHAMPAIGN -- A first-grade student took on a new role Friday as Fire Chief. Neveah Day won the drawing in October during Fire Safety Month.

Firefighters picked her up at Washington STEM Academy. She directed the fire truck back to the station, helped wash trucks and took pictures to share with her class.

Firefighters say it's a fun way to learn and it leaves a lasting impression. The department has sponsored "Chief for a Day" for nearly a decade. Crews say it's a day they always look forward to.
