EFFINGHAM COUNTY -- Three people were in court Wednesday morning after human remains were connected to a cold case of murder. Police say new evidence suggests the remains belong to 54-year old Joseph Delaney who disappeared from Effingham in July, 2011.
57-year old Christine Burr is charged with murder. 40-year old Kristy Mathis and 25-year old Zebadiah Houser are charged with covering it up. Their bonds are set at $200,000.
Police say, eight months after Delaney went missing, human remains were found in Jasper County near the Embarrass River. Police blocked off the area to search for evidence to take to the state crime lab. At the time, the sheriff's office says multiple other law enforcement agencies called for the results.
Now, police say they believe Delaney was murdered at the Colonnade Apartment Complex and his remains later disposed of in Jasper County. All three defendants will appear in court again on December 23.
