URBANA -- Police detained four people for questioning after a reported shooting Wednesday night. It started after police got a tip about people in a car shooting at another car on I-74.
A man called police saying he'd been robbed at gunpoint and the suspects were chasing him. State police caught up with the vehicles, traveling west on I-74. Both cars exited at Route 130.
One car crashed at the corner of University Avenue. Two men took off, but police caught them nearby. Authorities say they found the second car involved Near Mahomet at a BP Gas Station.
Crews are still cleaning up on University Avenue. Traffic lights are out at the intersection because of Wednesday's crash. Crews say drivers should be cautious and may experience delays. The lights should be replaced by Thursday evening.
URBANA -- Two suspects are in custody after a high-speed shootout through two counties Wednesday afternoon. Multiple police departments are still searching for a third suspect.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Vermilion County Sheriff's Office was contacted about a vehicle shooting at another car near Danville. Illinois State Police located the two vehicles traveling westbound on Interstate 74. The cars exited at University Avenue in Urbana.
In Urbana, one of the cars crashed near the Casey's General Store at Route 130, and two male subjects fled from the accident scene. They were found nearby and taken into custody.
The second car was abandoned near Mahomet, and a third suspect is still at large. A handgun was located on Interstate 74, and police believe it was involved in the shootout.
The Illinois State Police continue to investigate, with help from Urbana Police, Champaign Police, and the Vermilion County Sheriff's Office. They are expected to release more information Wednesday night or Thursday morning.
