They're both in the Champaign Southwest Mass Transit District, which doesn't have bus service. The apartments have a contract with CUMTD for bus stops two hours in the morning and at night. But, the YMCA gets no service at all.
Both groups are trying to change that. Yesterday, CUMTD board members issued a resolution stating it will not serve any areas outside its district. What that means is, unless the Southwest MTD dissolves and joins CUMTD, the "Y" and apartments won't see any extra buses.
Southwest MTD says it's all a political play. CUMTD says it's not. Southwest has another meeting in June. They say there's no talk of dissolving, but they will discuss the issue further and talk to residents in the district to find out their needs.
