ALPLM throws 209th celebration!

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) -- Monday marks the 209th birthday of the state's most storied president: Abraham Lincoln.

A hot spot to celebrate the day was the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. Admission was free and hundreds of visitors made the trek; more than 1,200.

Some special exhibits were on display. There was live Civil War-themed music and brand new pieces including a rare, angry, handwritten letter from Honest Abe himself.

Some families brought kids, plus there were busloads of students. Everything Lincoln-themed got special attention including a signed copy of the Emancipation Proclamation.

There were also art pieces from students around the state on display. Winners of the competition were announced. One first place winner came to see the exhibit in person.

Lincoln's legacy was clearly not forgotten. It was this day, 209 years ago when he was born into poverty, but went on to educate himself. He ultimately won the presidency and the Civil War, freeing millions of enslaved people.

Admission is usually $6 - $15, so it was a treat to have a free day. It's something the museum does every year.

Items on display will be available until February 27, including the signed copy of the Emancipation Proclamation, two love letters between Lincoln and the first lady as well as Lincoln's famous stovepipe hat.
