ILLINOIS -- Ameren Illinois is overhauling its natural gas service in Central Illinois. It launched a ten-year, $400 million project in Chatham. Upgrades will start with replacing more than 14,000 feet of steel, gas lines and some 300 residential service lines. Some of the pipes are 50-years old.

When the project is done, 350 miles of pipe will have been replaced with better lines, 70 stations will have been upgraded and more than 450,000 "smart meters" will have been added. The company also expects to add up to 80 full-time jobs for the project.
