SPRINGFIELD -- Some specially-trained dogs are brushing up on their crime fighting skills. Nearly two dozen dogs from around the country are in town over the next few days getting re-certified through the Arson Dog Program.

The four-legged investigators are specially trained to sniff out all kinds of chemicals which are used to start fires. Officials say the dogs play key roles in fire investigations. In addition to the annual re-certification, the program trains about ten new teams a year.

State Farm has been sponsoring the program for more than two decades. There are more than 80 active arson dog teams in the U.S. and Canada. There are 24 teams in Illinois helping solve arson fires.
