CHAMPAIGN -- About noon, police responded to a welfare check in the 2000-block of Cynthia Drive. Neighbors reported hearing loud noises then possible gunshots, so police surrounded the Garden Village Apartment Complex, only to find out nothing was wrong.
Jennifer Mohr lives in one of the apartments.
“I was trying to do some spring cleaning and there was a knock on the door. It was a really hard knock.”
When police took her outside to safety, she saw squad cars, lights and officers surrounding her apartment complex.
“We're looking around and next thing you know you see the SWAT team show up, then you see this robot show up.”
After police got everyone outside they focused on what was happening inside. Neighbors called police after hearing noises that sounded like gunshots, yelling and screaming.
Another resident living on the first floor under the suspect says, “Two days ago, there was a lot of yelling and a loud thump, but today I was lying in bed watching TV and I heard all kinds of commotion all across the apartment.”
MTD provided buses for everyone who was evacuated.
Another neighbor said, “It’s scary. I could have been laying in bed and got shot from up above.”
It took five hours for police to finally make contact with the suspect. They found a damaged apartment but no weapons, or signs of criminal activity.
Mohr said, “Even for me, as an adult, it was really long and exhausting and cold. It’s almost Thanksgiving time. Be thankful for what little I have that I’m safe out of this whole situation.”
The property manager assisted the police department getting inside of the home. The suspect was not arrested, but was taken for a mental health evaluation.
CHAMPAIGN -- Residents of an evacuated apartment complex are being allowed back into their homes. A suspect was the only person in an apartment.
The man was not arrested, but taken for a mental health evaluation.

Residents in the apartment complex reported hearing a series of loud noises, then say they heard what they thought were gunshots. Police still had the apartment surrounded as of 4:00 pm.
Police departments from Champaign, UI, Rantoul and the county sheriff were on scene as well as a swat team and bomb squad. Police evacuated the complex as a precaution.
The city brought in two MTD buses to keep people from the complex warm. Unit 4 schools opened Garden Hills Elementary so people could get water and use restrooms.
