When it comes to sending a child to kindergarten, parents want to make sure they're taking all the right steps.
"It really does start from birth. It's not something you just start preparing before school starts when you're buying school supplies. There's a long time leading up to it."
The United Way of Champaign County is making sure all the information is right at your fingertips. The group teamed up with students at UI and Parkland to create the app.
"It's an app that basically allows parents to be involved in getting their kids ready for kindergarten."
It gives parents tips, different activities and different ways to make sure students have all they need when they enter the classroom.
"Most kindergarten teachers we talk to will say, 'The academics we can teach once we get here. We can teach them how to read, the a-b-c's. It's more of that social and emotional skills they need from parents and the community to help kids develop.'"
The app also directs parents to resources around town. Small things which can make a big difference when their little one heads off to school.
The app is called United Way Pre-K. It's currently on Google Play and is set to come out on iTunes in a few weeks.
