WASHINGTON -- Severe weather erupted throughout the Midwest Sunday afternoon with tornadoes tearing through several cities. At least three people were killed, in Illinois, as a result of the severe storms, said Jonathon Monken, director of the Illinois Emergency Management Agency.

Law enforcement officials are asking non-emergency crews to stay away from the area. They are not asking for anymore volunteer help currently.

Police warn anyone who doesn't need to be in the area should stay away due to the extent of the damage. The National Guard is coming in to provide assistance.

People in Washington are being told to conserve water due to several water main breaks. Washington Middle School, Washington High School and Crossroads Methodist Church are all serving as shelters.

Police say the injured should seek help at the Washington Fire Department or Illini Medical, at 201 North Cummings.
