ILLINOIS -- The Illinois Fire Service Institute Library (IFSIL) is one of 30-finalists in the running for a national award.
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) released the list of 30-finalists for the 2017 National Medal for Museum and Library Service. It's the highest honor given to museums and libraries for community service.
IFSIL is an integral part of the Illinois Fire Service Institute, which is the state's statutory academy. IFSIL is on the UIUC campus.
It trains more than 61,000 first responders per year, providing fire/emergency library and information assistance and services to the Institute's instructional staff, students, Illinois fire departments and firefighters.
IFSIL is the only library in the state dedicated to fire and emergency services and is the third largest in the U.S. Its collection includes more than 65,000 titles in a variety of media.
It's also home to the Illinois Firefighter Line of Duty Deaths Database; a collection of nearly 900 firefighter records.
