NATIONAL -- A nationally-acclaimed civil rights leader, with roots in Peoria, is getting the highest civilian honor one can be awarded. President Barack Obama will honor C.T. Vivian with a Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Vivian is a distinguished minister, author and civil rights organizer who led his first sit-in in Peoria. Vivian went on to work alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and currently leads the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

Peoria NAACP president Don Jackson attended the Carver Center when Vivian served as its recreation director. He says it's a proud moment for those who know him.

Vivian currently lives in Atlanta. He is one of fifteen people to receive the honor this year.
