CHAMPAIGN -- The shutdown is even affecting area schools. Unit 4 district leaders say the volunteer hiring process is being delayed.

Before someone can work with students, they have to undergo a background check. It includes national checks and the FBI. But, the shutdown is putting them a few days behind.

Officials say the delays are currently minimal and not affecting the district too much, but if the shutdown continues much longer, things will get worse.
