URBANA -- It's the holiday season which means blood centers see a drop in donations. That's why Community Blood Services is using a familiar tradition to change that.

It's using a mascot called "Blood on the Shelf" to spark interest in donating. The character plays off "Elf on a Shelf."

The center says donation levels dip by at least 20% around this time of year because students are gone, it's flu season and people are avoiding the cold weather.
