BOT agrees with student support of transgender coverage

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS -- Hundreds of UI students made a request and school trustees listened. The BOT voted to add sex change operations and treatments to the student health insurance plan. Only two of ten trustees voted against it.

To cover the cost, student insurance rates will increase $2 per semester. Nearly 40 schools around the country cover the procedure under student insurance.

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS -- Plans of whether or not to move forward with a university healthcare change sparked a lively debate. Students met to decide whether or not to pursue with getting transgender operations on the university healthcare plan.

Some students were on board, but others thought there are more pressing issues. The University of Illinois Student Senate voted in favor of the proposed student health insurance plan which would include gender confirmation surgery. The Board of Trustees will vote March 6.
