Cellphone scam involves spoofing

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) -- A new robo-caller is using your cellphone number to scam others.

Jason Cerezo says it's happening to him. He started receiving calls and texts from numbers asking why was he contacting them.

He insisted it wasn't him until one person texted him a picture of their call log, showing his number. It's called phone spoofing. Scammers are able to digitally use your number to call others in the area.

Cerezo says it's bad for his business. He gets calls from numbers he needs to answer, but now is nervous to pick up his phone.

Cerezo has reported it to the FCC. He said his friend had a similar situation and, after reporting it, the phone spoofing stopped after a month.
