The four major wireless carriers made it possible to send the tests, but Metcad, in Urbana, is one of many 911 centers in the country which can't get those messages yet. Leaders say they're working with vendors to determine equipment needs and cost.
Some dispatchers say, a text could help those who are speech impaired or in a situation where making a call could be dangerous. Metcad says the goal is to have it up and running here by the first quarter of 2015.
