It looks at three different things between 2009 and 2012; population growth, employment growth and income growth. In all three categories, Champaign is excelling.
In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it may be hard to believe just five years ago, we were in a recession. Even though the state is still slowly recovering, Champaign is doing its best to put those days behind it.
"I think that's something the whole community can be very proud of. To know how healthy the Champaign community is doing, in terms of our business climate and our ability to grow, even coming out of a pretty tough recession."
A new list on Nerd Wallet Finance lists the Top Ten Fastest Growing Cities in the State. In among all the Chicago-area towns, Champaign is number three.
"Well, it's very exciting and it speaks highly of how progressive our community is and how supportive we are of growing business, especially high-tech business within the city of Champaign."
It helps when you have this community a part of your city.
"The growth and development of Research Park at the University of Illinois has been such a boon for the community and has really allowed businesses to grow and high-tech businesses to flourish in the community and that's really contributed to these great records."
The article specifically lists Research Park as a source of new jobs in the area, mentioning Yahoo and Enterprise Works. The only other Central Illinois town in the top ten was Normal.
Income and population growth also added to Champaign's ranking. Between 2009 - 2012, Champaign's median income grew by more than 32%, and the population went up by 4%, laying claim to almost 70,000 people.
