CHAMPAIGN -- Before Tuesday night's city council meeting, city leaders learned about backyard chickens by visiting Karen Carney's backyard. The animals have been legal in town for about six months. Carney's had hers since April.
She says she wants people to understand they don't smell and they don't bother her neighbors. About 40 people came to the open house including council members, neighbors and friends. The hens aren't laying eggs yet, but Carney expects they will by the end of summer.
