Resolution passes pushing for mascot search

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS (WCIA) -- As UI student leaders push to fill a void, many in Central Illinois disagree.

The Illinois Student Government is pushing for officials to continue searching for a mascot. A resolution recommending steps the university should take passed 20-to-6 Wednesday night.

They say it reaffirms a student senate committee recommendation from last year. A co-author of the resolution says they're not trying to make people forget about the Chief.

They say it's why they didn't include "new mascot" in the language of the resolution. They didn't want to define whether the Chief was a "mascot" or a "symbol."

But, others say they don't want a mascot; there are plenty of universities without one. They say they'd rather stick with none than have a superficial symbol fill the gap.

Chief Illiniwek was the symbol for the UI from 1926 - 2007. Many students want to see a mascot which represents inclusiveness and diversity.

Student leaders say the next step is for the resolution to be seen by the campus senate.

A couple weeks ago, the Honor the Chief Society had someone representing Chief Illiniwek in the Homecoming Parade. It sparked protest and a debate between those who are pro- and anti-Chief.

The UI's student body president wrote a letter to the university saying it wouldn't be respectful.
