Christensen's lawyers file motion to bar expert testimony from trial

Government has until January 9th to respond

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) -- Christensen's defense team is fighting back against the government.

Brendt Christensen is accused of kidnapping and killing missing U of I scholar Yingying Zhang. Zhang has been missing for nearly seven months.

Their motion filed this week states the government plans to use at least ten additional experts. Those would cover topics from fingerprint, video, cell data and audio analysis, chinese culture and canine cadaver searches.

His lawyers say the government didn't give them enough time to look over forensic evidence to prepare.

The court ordered prosecutors to provide all analysis and written summaries of testimony by December 15th, 2017. Those summaries have to describe the witness opinions, bases and reasons for those opinions, and witness qualifications.

But the defense says "not a single summary has been provided for these alleged experts opinions."

The government has until Tuesday to respond.

In early October, Christensen was charged with one count of kidnapping resulting in death, and two counts of false statements.

It carries a potential sentence for death, but it isn't a death penalty case yet.

Christensen's trial is set for February 27th, 2018. The government has until the first of February to decide whether or not they'll seek the death penalty.
