URBANA -- City council members approved a resolution supporting a proposed bill which would force area hospitals to pay property taxes. Currently, non-profit hospitals do not pay property taxes, as long as they meet a certain threshold of charitable acts.

But last month, state lawmakers introduced a bill removing the property tax exemption. Mayor Laurel Prussing says the city misses out on about $800,000 in tax revenue from Carle Hospital alone. Prussing also said without the funds, the city will be destroyed.
