Doug Hanner's car draws a lot of attention. To Doug and his wife, it's more than just a way to get around.
"These are our two kids, these two cars right here."
It's a way of life.
"You get in the Corvette culture, and it's not a culture. It's a family."
Doug's family is the Corvette Club of Illinois.
"Our club is 200 strong now. We have a golf outing in September. All the money goes to Beth's Place down in Tuscola. We were at the marathon at a water station."
From volunteering to road trips, Doug leads the group.
"I've been the president of the Corvette Club of Illinois since '74."
It's a role he took on shortly after buying his first "baby."
"Bought my first Corvette in February of '73. 20 years old. To me, it's the ultimate car because it's the only sports car the United States ever made. It's the only true fiberglass, 2-seat sports car manufacturers made."
Doug says, it's also the ultimate escape.
"You may have a bad day at work or a bad day at home. You get in your Corvette and just take a ride. The wind blows through your hair and everything just ceases. It's just like therapy, I guess."
"Doug, this moment is what you say it's all about. I think I had a stressful day looking at cool cars all day. I think we should go for a ride."
"We can go for a ride, just don't tell my wife."
"Let's go for a cruise, Doug."
WCIA-3 News is live at the Bloomington Gold Corvette Show Friday. Other events take place throughout the week. Mid America Motorworks is leading a caravan to Champaign Thursday with the Corvette Club. It ends at Old Chicago Pizza.
