SHELBYVILLE -- A century-old auditorium may not be torn down after all. The Shelbyville City Council decided Monday night to not take bids for the demolition of the Chautauqua; at least for now.

The auditorium is crumbling, but city leaders want to give supporters more time to make repairs. An engineer will assess the building and offer a "bare bones" solution. If that doesn't work, city officials may move ahead with tearing it down.
