CHAMPAIGN -- Parents and students will soon feel safer walking to South Side Elementary School. The city council is recommending changes at Prospect and Daniel.

In September, a girl was hit by a car while crossing the street on her way to school. Council members agreed Tuesday night putting in a crosswalk and hiring a crossing guard would be the best solution.

It would take several weeks to complete. Parents say they're happy. The city council will make a final decision at its next meeting.

Drivers will also have to slow down to 20 miles per hour. The new signs and crossing guard will cost the city about $12,000 this year.
