MACON COUNTY -- Officials say a program to protect the elderly from crime is working. The Elderly Victims Crime Unit was set up last year to help address elderly abuse, neglect and scams.

Authorities say the biggest problem they see is identity theft. So far, the unit has helped prosecute about two dozen cases.

The unit is a joint partnership between the Macon County Sheriff's Office and State's Attorney's Office. It's one of the only programs of its kin in the country.
