CHAMPAIGN -- The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District is busy helping people apply for health insurance. WCIA-3's Drew Wilder shows how the district overcame a couple of glitches in the website to get through the first day.

"The Medicare part is working OK and that's what you're trying now. That's working fine, but the Marketplace is still the one that's taking longer."

With so many people accessing, the site is moving slowly. Awais Vaid is helping customers and designated counselors navigate the new website.

"We saw our first people walk in the door about 7:45 - 8 am."

Since then, CUPHD has added more computers and counselors to accommodate the number of applicants and their questions.

"Questions that come up are about eligibility. But, like I said, the website is very self-explanatory, so it is actually detailing out what they need to answer."

Jeanette McMullen is one of the many getting help navigating the site.

"This is going to help you figure out if you're eligible for Medicaid or if you're eligible for insurance."

The ability to receive health insurance at a low cost is a big deal to her and her family.

"I'm excited about getting healthcare because I've had a heart attack and open heart surgery, so me getting the healthcare is going to be wonderful, to go see the doctor."

The health department will have counselors on staff to help with questions people have as they apply. The deadline to sign up for the Affordable Care Act is March 31, 2014.
