ILLINOIS -- Friday was the first day of firearms deer hunting season. It could mean food for some needy families. If you buy a tag, but can't use or don't want all of the meat, you can give it to the state.

The donated deer meat will then be processed into burgers and given to local food pantries. Hunters have donated more than one million pounds of deer meat since the program started in the mid-90's.

The state says the need is especially great this time of year because of cuts to food stamps and the recent tornadoes.
