SPRINGFIELD -- WCIA-3's Ashley Michels Digs Deeper into the delay at the state's crime lab which may have led to the release of an accused shooter last week. State police agreed to do an interview, but when we asked if budgets contributed to problems of processing evidence, the lab director failed to answer directly.

No direct answer to the question of enough staff either. As far as statistics are concerned, we were told we'd have to file an open records request. When asked directly if there's a delay in processing, the head of the crime lab emphasized he couldn't give specifics for how many cases are currently open, but that the department is doing the best it can with what it has.
