MAHOMET -- After waiting for years, Champaign County drivers will finally get a new bridge. Workers will start construction Monday on Highway 50 where it crosses I-74. That's near Lake of the Woods. WCIA-3's Anna Carrera has more.

A group of friends come to Uncle Buck's a couple times a week after playing a round of golf. For some of them, it's kind of a bumpy ride.

"At least five days a week I use this road," said Ralph Specht, who lives in Mahomet. "It's been tore up for quite some time."

Specht is talking about the bridge between his neighborhood and the green.

"Very rough; always has been," said Specht. "It's high time they got it fixed."

Drivers have only been able to use one side of this road for the past few years. But, even on the side they haven't been using, you can see the road is cracked, broken and falling apart.

Drivers have to wait for their turn at a stoplight when they want to cross now, but on Monday, the bridge will be closed for good, so it can be replaced. That will make the trip to the golf course a little longer for some.

"I'll have to go through the Lake of the Woods and cut through, or I'll have to go down Prairie View Road and come down that way," said Specht. "Yeah, it's going to be an inconvenience for me. It'd be nice when they get it fixed. We've waited a long time for this."

Traffic on I-74 will also be affected during construction. The highway will be closed at various times, but only on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays from 10 pm - 6 am. The new bridge should be done in about a year.
