Dog travels 8,000+ miles for heart surgery

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS (WCIA) -- Nana, the 3-year old Chihuahua, came to the UI Vet Med Clinic, all the way from Thailand since no one there could repair her damaged heart.

Nana was diagnosed with a heart condition a few months ago, but there wasn't a cardiologist or surgeon in Thailand who could do the procedure. Now, the tiny dog with a big heart is recovering.

Unfortunately, that big heart became too big, causing her defect. Dr. Vitt was visiting a university in Thailand when he found her suffering the heart condition involving a vessel which should have closed at birth.

But, there wasn't anyone there who could fix her. That's when the  two universities came up with a plan. They paid for Nana to come here with two veterinarians to watch the procedure.

Nana is just the beginning. The schools hope to continue the partnership. The Thai vets still need more hospital instruments to perform other procedures at their clinic in Bangkok. Nana returns to Thailand July 20.
